A fascinating year in which the smaller budgeted films became the talk of the town

''Remember Me'', ''Welcome To The Rileys'' and ''Eclipse'' eligible for The Writers Guild of America

WGA: 'Speech,' 'Toy Story 3' ineligble for awards

The Writers Guild of America has held tough on qualifying scripts for its awards, this year yielding just 76 eligible screenplays -- down seven from last year's total and less than half the figure from 2008.

The guild's tough restrictions -- requiring that scripts be produced under WGA jurisdiction and that the scripts be formally submitted for consideration -- leaves several notable candidates out of the WGA awards mix, including "Another Year," "Biutiful," "Blue Valentine," "The Ghost Writer," "The King's Speech," "Made in Dagenham," "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "Toy Story 3" and "Winter's Bone."

The WGA ballot, mailed recently to members, lists 43 screenplays in the original category and 33 in the adapted class.

''Remember Me'' among The 10 Best Movie Deaths Of 2010

It's not an easy thing to admit, especially in the season of peace and love and joy, but there's nothing much better than a good movie death scene. Whether it's watching the bad guy finally vanquished or seeing your conflicted hero shot down to save a nation, movie deaths can bring catharsis, satisfaction, or-- let's face it-- brutal happiness when done right. And even though 2010 wasn't really a great year for action movies, it was a pretty stellar one for movie deaths, both the dramatic "go out in a hail of bullets" kind and the more creative, shocking ones too.

I had more than 20 options when I first started putting together this list, and whittled it down to 10 of not only the most awesome, but the ones least likely to spoil the entire movie if you haven't seen it yet (except in the case of Remember Me, since at this point the ending is fairly well publicized-- but read that one at your own risk). As you go into this list of the best movie deaths in 2010, you shouldn't have to worry about spoilers too much, but if you're the anxious kind, fair warning !

What's the most under-appreciated movie of 2010?

Last week, we wondered which film was the most under-appreciated of 2010. Through tweets, e-mails and comments, many of you weighed in with your choices.

Some of the more popular picks didn't surprise -- they were big-release movies with a distinct sensibility that got dissed despite (or because) they felt unique -- "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" most notably among them, or even the Sept. 11 romantic tearjerker "Remember Me."

Others were indie favorites that simply never caught fire with enough people: David Michod's dark Australian gangster movie "Animal Kingdom," or Nicole Holofcener's intimate look at (mostly female) relationships, "Please Give." 'Remember Me' list as a Massively Underrated film in 2010 

Over the next ten days, as we attempt to put 2010 in perspective, Film.com will be presenting a myriad of top tens for your reading enjoyment. Then our writers and distinguished contributors will have their ballots tabulated, and the Film.com "Film of the Year" will be awarded on January 1.

In the meantime, a few accolades for the films that didn't make my top ten.

Massively Underrated: Youth in Revolt / Remember Me
Youth in Revolt was an innovative comedy, but it was released during a time period where people skip the theatrical experience. And if Remember Me had featured Ryan Gosling instead of Robert Pattinson it would have been correctly hailed as great. But people got far too caught up in the ending and Pattinson's celebrity to catch that he was really freaking good in this movie. Definitely worth a watch if you you're a fan of relationship dramas.
