The New York Times : Into the Woods With Balenciaga

The New York Times : Into the Woods With Balenciaga

The Balenciaga show was just over as Francois Pinault, the art patron and founder of PPR, slipped out of the backstage, past a throng of waiting guests. A sustained roar followed as the models, still in their outfits, clapped and cheered.

Two, three minutes went by. Then a security guard ushered in the actress Kristen Stewart, dressed in scribble-print white jeans and a black tank top, a lime-yellow leather jacket slung over her shoulder, to have her moment with Nicolas Ghesquiere.

She talked and talked. Oh, brother. As Mr. Ghesquiere listened, she worked her way from outfit to the next, saying what she liked about it. She skipped nothing and her enthusiasm showed.

Holding up the line at Balenciaga is understandable, but on Thursday morning, as the Paris shows accelerated, Mr. Ghesquiere put a lot of new options on the runway. In one sense, the lean tailoring and white, squared-off tops, with their Catholic overtones, brought his designs back to his roots at Balenciaga, when the cool clothes attracted a girl force. But in another way, this collection was confidently grown up, as if Mr. Ghesquiere knew he had nothing to prove.

“I think Balenciaga has given me a quiet force,” he said.

Several things stood out. First, the innovations in fabrics were not belabored, as they sometimes were in the past. I’m not sure I fully understood Mr. Ghesquiere’s explanation about the fabric for tank and strapless dresses with a ruffle crawling up the leg—it sounded like a new type of crepe de chine, maybe with bonding. Anyway, the fabric looked pliable and light, and the ruffled skirts came in more stripped-down styles, too. Also appealing were white lace and knit tops, as rigid as a lacquered doily.

The collection had a touch of mythology and nature (in knife pleated skirts embroidered with black thorns or, if you like, barbed wire). Out of those two forces, though, Mr. Ghesquiere found a compelling new silhouette—an easy tank dress, almost an apron, with a flared skirt and a swag of pinstriped fabric in the front. The music, from the French group Lescop, was “La Foret.”

Leaden skies over Paris greeted “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart as she arrived at this morning’s Balenciaga show. “Yeah, I guess I’m used to it,” she said with a smile.

The actress, who fronts Balenciaga’s Florabotanica scent, said she’s still hunting for her next film project, but if she had her druthers, it would be a screen adaptation of “Lie Down in Darkness,” a novel by William Styron about a dysfunctional family. “It’s hard to get a movie like that made nowadays,” said the petite star, dressed in a yellow biker jacket and printed black jeans.

Sneak Peek of a new Robert and Kristen Interview

Sneak Peek of a new Robert and Kristen Interview

Robert

What advice would you give to your younger self on the first day of Twilight ?
On literally the first take of the first scene, I had to run over and pick up Kristen. And I almost tore my arse-cheek muscle, my glute, because I crouched down wrong. So I’d say: ‘Don’t squat down so low’.

How was the Twilight experience changed you ?
I’m probably more insecure. My ego got smaller [laughs]. I thought I was pretty cool after the first one. I finished the movie and for the first time, I had some money. The Twilight trailer had come out and got eight million hits so I had all the best parts of being in a big movie. I had meetings were people were saying, ‘This is the new hot thing, eh?’ Everyone gave a shit about you, but no-one knew who you were outside of that. So I spent eight months getting wasted with everyone thinking I was great. It was really fun. It was different at the start. TMZ and all that stuff was getting prevalent and now, it’s insane. Becoming big now, you became insanely conservative. Terrified about everything. Now I just stay at home.

Did you keep any mementoes from the films ?
The first one, I kept pretty much the whole wardrobe because I didn’t have any clothes then. There was an interview I did – with MTV or something – with a superfan. I was supposed to go in and surprise her, and after 10 seconds, she was like, ‘Are you wearing the same outfit as Edward?’ I’d completely forgotten, but they were the same clothes!

Kristen describes you as being ‘ridiculously ambitious’. Is that true ?
I think I want to be…The difference between me and Kristen is that she can do a day of work and at the end of the day be like,’I did the absolute best I could. Satisfied.’ Whereas I don’t think I’ve ever had that day in my life. I always go home irritated and want to fix it the next day. I don’t know who has the bigger ego in that case. Whether hers is bigger because she thinks what she did is fine, or whether mine’s bigger because I think I’m so great it’s never going to be good enough.

What has the franchise done for you career in general ?
It’s done a lot. But the same time, you have to steer it. You can sink just as quickly as someone who’s never had this. It’s not a free pass. I think about how to carefully plan the route afterwards. You can’t do anything you want. And if I ever stop acting, I want people to remember my stuff as interesting after I got given my break.

Kristen

In what ways has Robert changed since the franchise began?
Rob is ridiculously ambitious. I see this drive and it’s only starting…especially right now because this is all coming to an end. I guess it’s not a change, it’s just something that’s come out and developed

Balenciaga has unveiled their new highly-anticipated scent, ‘Florabotanica’. Florabotanica is the third fragrance for the fashion house, following on from ‘Balenciaga Paris’ and L’Essence’. The exhilarating fragrance includes a vetiver, amber and caladium-leaf accord, that is balanced by a (hybrid) rose, carnation and mint accord. The campaign stars Twilight actress Kristen Stewart wearing a structured floral-print dress from Nicolas Ghesquière’s spring/summer 2008 collection for the label and strikes the perfect balance between masculine and feminine—this duality is also beautifully captured by the new scent. We had the chance to chat with Balenciaga’s Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière about the inspiration for the fragrance and why Kristen Stewart captures the essence of the scent.

HR: The campaign was shot by Steven Meisel and stars Twilight actress Kristen Stewart, why was she chosen to be the face of the fragrance?
Ghesquière: For me, Kristen Stewart has a very unique personality. I had this special project due for a magazine and I asked her to be a part of that story. That’s how we met. The moment I met her I thought she was so Balenciaga and she had such an interesting personality and a great beauty. I began wishing for her to be part of my story so I kept that in mind, and when we started working on this project, I knew it had to be her.

"Both are mysterious, and mystery provokes desire. Both choose very define artistic ways in which I recognize myself. And they feel in the same way with my fashion, so that way we can create a kind of creative dialogue."

Not surprisingly, after a month of this, Riley and Heglund, and their co-star Kristen Stewart, who plays Dean's wild-child girlfriend, Marylou, were desperately keen to move on. Which was probably Salles's intention. Over the subsequent six months they properly took to the highway. "Walter wanted us to be as bonded as possible. We had to wrap Kristen's stuff in the first three months so we were flying all over the place to get the right weather," Riley recalls. "We went down to Patagonia for four days for the snow, and then Louisiana, 100% humidity, then Arizona, then Mexico, then Calgary, then we finished in San Francisco… "
