'Twilight' series puts Bella and Jacob on top of the year's most popular baby names

Last year, it was announced that Bella had become such a popular baby name that it took second place in the previous decade's list for girl babies . . . as did Jacob for boys. Bella was also listed as 2009's most popular name for dogs.

A recent press release has announced that Bella and Jacob were the year's most popular baby names and that Edward and Cullen were also progressing nicely on the list.

Jacob is the most popular baby name for boys, continuing an 11-year run at the top . . .

Edward Cullen is one of the lead characters in the "Twilight" books and movies. Edward moved up only 11 spots, to No. 137 on the list. But Cullen was the biggest riser among boys' names, moving up 297 spots, to No. 485.

The report goes on to show that 22,000 U.S. babies were named Bella in 2009 and that 21,000 were named Jacob.

Baby names often become popular because of celebrities. For example, Emma debuted in the top 10 in 2002, the same year that Jennifer Aniston's character on "Friends" gave the name to her TV show baby.

The report does note that the name Jacob enjoyed high positioning on the list long before the Twilight series.
