Kristen Interview with El Pais

Kristen Interview with El Pais

Wearing a Blondie t-shirt, black shorts and an orange leather jacket by Balenciaga, the actress agreed to answering our questions, apologizing for not taking off her sunglasses that hid "a terrible flu".

How does one put themselves in the shoes of a fictitious character but based on a real person ? The responsibility must be double, as you have to do justice to the book and to the spirit of the actual Beat Generation.
Responsibility is the word that better describes it. That's how I felt when I was shooting this movie. I read the book when I was 14 and I can say it was the first time I enjoyed a book. Thanks to it, I realized I liked reading, and it also made me discover other authors that have really left a mark in my life. The book was the start of my adolescence, that moment full of emotions, passion and strong beliefs.

Walter Salles Mentions Kristen with City Pages

Salles met Kristen Stewart prior to her Twilight days, and realized that she had an in-depth understanding of Kerouac's book and of her character Marylou prior to working on the film.

"Kristen was so concentrated on the set, and she fought for that character with everything that she had," Salles says. "It was very moving to see that."

Kristen Interview with Detroit News

Kristen Interview with Detroit News

In "On the Road," Kristen Stewart turns into a wild child. Yes, there's nudity and drugs and much irresponsible behavior, but more importantly, Stewart, playing Mary Lou, who's based on the real-life LuAnne Henderson, has to bring a primal fierceness to her character.

"The most difficult part about flipping into the part was to just be able to do her justice in the way she moved people — to be that infectious, undeniable presence in the room," Stewart says on the phone from New York.

Stewart, 22, says she herself is more of an observer than a firebrand.

"I want to find people like that. I want to watch them. I'm definitely not the one people are chasing after — I do a bit more of the chasing," the former "Twilight" star says.

Kristen Interview with AZ Central

Kristen Interview with AZ Central

Let’s face it, if you’re Kristen Stewart, you’re forever going to be known as the actress from the “Twilight” movies.

That’s what happens when you’re the face of a franchise. But Stewart has also done some interesting smaller films, such as “The Cake Eaters,” “Adventureland” and “The Runaways” (playing a young Joan Jett).

“On the Road,” director Walter Salles’ version of the famous Jack Kerouac book, offers Stewart another chance to step away from Bella Swan. She plays Marylou, ex-wife of the character based on Neal Cassady (played by Garrett Hedlund). Stewart talked about that and what it was like to balance life between blockbusters.

Walter Salles Talks About Kristen with TC Daily Planet

Walter Salles Talks About Kristen with TC Daily Planet

Talk about the cast..
So other casting took place very early on in 2006-07, and the film was almost green lit by 2008 until the economic crisis interrupted and it affected independent film and funding was completely blocked. It took us three more years to put this all together and by then, the actors we had selected had become known for other films. [..] Kristen Stewart was invited to be in the film when I saw her Into The Wild in 2006, and I had no idea the Twilight saga was about to dominate, but she remained closely tied to it for many years. She did say she was thankful it didn’t happen around filming the Twilight films; she had read On the Road and understood Marylou's character, but also said that it would had been hard for her to get all the layers right for her character since she wasn’t mature enough.

I found Kristen Stewart’s performance to be very memorable. What do you think she understood about Marylou that audiences would never see if they just know her as Bella Swan?
I first heard about Kristen about the time she did ‘Into the Wild,’ early 2006, and she was recommended to me for ‘On the Road.’ So we met, and once we started to exchange ideas about the book, not only did she know it inside out, but she also had an in-depth understanding of the Marylou character. She realized that Marylou was ahead of her time – a free thinker and an independent decision maker, given she was a woman during the 1950s. Kristen, in her independent film work, drifts towards roles in which women are independent and have a voice. She fought for the role with everything that she could, it was very moving. She got access to hours of interview with the late Luanne Henderson, who was the real life basis for Mary Lou, and that material was truly inspiring for her. She realized how sensitive and how non judgmental her character was, and it freed her to give a three dimensional quality to that character. I find her performance to be moving and generous.

Kristen Interview with Chicago Sun Times

Kristen Stewart: Nude scenes "seemed so necessary" in "On the Road"

"Human beings are just animals", says Kristen Stewart. "It’s about fiercely living and squeezing every single drop out of life and not denying any aspects of it."

Despite her up-and-down personal life, Stewart is not talking about herself or any dramas that have tabloid headlines attached to them. Instead, she’s mulling over her explicit scenes in "On the Road", opening Friday.

"So much is clearly illustrated through her sexuality in her film", Stewart says of her character Marylou. "But there was nothing about it that seemed gratuitous. It just seemed so necessary. There was simply no question that this would be a more sexual role."

How did you know you'd got the role?
I met director Walter Salles – weirdly – in Cannes, the year after 'Control', which was there in 2007. My wife [Alexandra Maria Lara] was on the jury. We had breakfast together, he'd seen 'Control' and he said that he was doing On The Road, that he'd like to meet me, and he was meeting a lot of people. Later that year, nearer Christmas, I went to New York and auditioned with Garrett [Hedlund], who'd already been signed up for quite a while, a least a year or so. Kristen [Stewart] was as well. And we went out for the evening, Garrett and I, and we hit it off really well, then we auditioned together the next day. I thought it went well – I mean, you can usually tell whether they are interested or not. But, like anyone else. I thought it would be an unusual choice to hire in a six-foot blond Yorkshireman to play a stocky, Quebecois, Boston-American icon.

Do you feel that you lived this journey?
Walter would have liked it to have been more chronological, but we had to shoot Kristen first, then we had to go back and do it again. But, I mean, there weren't any stunt drivers. And when we were walking through the snow, we were always wondering when he'd call cut. He used tricks like that, because he wanted it to be as real and spontaneous as possible. I mean, we could have tried to fit every scene of the book into the film, but that wouldn't have made for a very watchable film. So he tried to capture with us the spirit of it, if not the running order. There were hours and hours of footage. I remember we were halfway through the shoot and we thought, We've got three hours of footage now, and there's still three and a half months to go.

How much of your own driving did you do?
I don't do as much driving as Garrett. He was amazing - he bought one, a Hudson. So he knew everything about these cars, he was an excellent driver. I needed glasses, which I didn't tell anyone about! And one day they put Eric in the middle of the road with the camera and said, "Drive as fast as you can, and stop as close to the camera as you can." I was sat next to Kristen, and... I don't remember. He was just a dot and a blur, until we got quite close. After the take, Kristen was like, "Wow, you loved that! Dude, you had your face right up against the windscreen!" And I was like, "Yes, because I couldn't see a thing!"

Was it strange that Kristen was in and out of the shoot?
Yeah, but she was there for the first three months. It was strange with the other people. I finished a day after Garrett, but we were there from the very first day of Boot Camp to the very last second of wrap. And on the way, people came and went the whole time. Steve Buscemi was there for a week. Kirsten Dunst would be there, then she'd go, then she'd come back. Same with Viggo Mortensen. We just kept travelling around America, and people would come and work. And I'd never seen America either, really, so that worked for my character, to see all these things for the first time.
