Jackson Rathbone On The Joy (And Pain) Of M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender'
Jackson Rathbone is best known for his role as vampire Jasper Hale in "The Twilight Saga," playing one of the many adopted siblings of Robert Pattinson's Edward Cullen. But the geek community is about to get to know Rathbone for a whole different reason: he's starring in "The Last Airbender," M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation of the animated television series.
Rathbone plays Sokka, a member of the Southern Water Tribe. As a character who hails from a tremendously cold climate, Rathbone himself was forced to learn a thing or two about dealing with difficult temperatures while shooting "The Last Airbender."
"One of the things we got to learn about while working on 'The Last Airbender' was how to act in weather when it's about 80 degrees below zero," he recalled in an interview with MTV News. "We filmed the first two weeks in Greenland and it was about the coldest I've ever been. So cold that I don't think my eyes functioned correctly. I couldn't blink! It was just so cold. So I learned how to act under extremely heavy circumstances."
Although there was no small amount of discomfort for Rathbone while shooting "The Last Airbender," there were plenty of upsides for the young actor — chief among them was the opportunity to work with Shyamalan, a director that Rathbone has long admired.
"I got to work with M. Night, which was amazing," he said. "I've been a huge fan of his since 'The Sixth Sense.' It was one of those things as a young actor where you're growing up and getting to work with the filmmakers you used to study. I used to study his films when I was in high school. I just used to watch them and all of his shots, and now I get to be a part of it. It's pretty exciting."
