Rob Interview translation

This 24 year old londonite barely needs introduction, because in three years he has become an international star thanks to his role as vampire Edward Cullen. We spoke to him before the premiere of ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” about the film and much more. Ladies and gentlemen…Robert Pattinson!

Hello Robert! Edward is considered a romantic hero, but he also has flaws and is very possessive. What do you think? Has he changed?
Yes. His flaws in the first two movies and the story are caused by a type of disconnect from reality, and when he finally finds something to hold on to, this feeling of possessiveness emerges. As the saga evolves, he accepts he’s part of this contemporary world and these flaws begin to disappear. In ‘Eclipse’ he comes out of his shell more, so we hope that at the end of “Breaking Dawn” he’s this normal seventeen-year-old guy except a bit paler.

The concept of a soul is very important to Edward. Do you also believe we have a soul?
Do I believe in having a soul? Yes, definitely. I don’t remember exactly what Edward said but it was something like, “A soul and heaven must exist because people are not sufficiently rewarded on Earth.”

Would you compete with another guy for a woman like Jacob and Edward?
Are you asking me if I’d sleep with a woman and some other guy?

Only if you’d compete!
No. If you’re the one that is with the girl in the first place I guess you’d have to fight a bit, but I don’t think I’d ever be in Jacob’s place because then you’d only end up being the guy she breaks up with.

Have you ever gotten into a fight over a girl?
Yea, but it wasn’t because of love mostly pride.

How was it working side by side with Taylor Lautner? In ’Eclipse’ you have more scenes together.
It was great because I’d never done anything that wasn’t with Kristen. Besides, Taylor is very good. For Edward it’s hard to allow himself to feel emotions like jealousy of Jacob and not be able to control himself when he’s near. However, it’s easier to interpret.

Taylor has a great line when Jacob has to say he’s hotter than Edward. How was that scene?
It was fun. There are many good lines from Jacob in that scene. In a couple of sequences there’s scenes where I push him a little and I’m supposedly going to grab his shoulder, but when I do his shoulder is too big. Taylor kept having to dress with the warewolf’s uniform and try to be intimidating with those clothes and I kept slapping him in the head and stuff.

Are there any scenes with him that you especially enjoyed?
It was fantastic having him there in some scenes. I like the ones where Bella has to reveal something of herself in front of Edward and Jacob at the same time.

Has there been a time during shooting that you had to contain your laughter in fun scenes, like the tent scene?
I was really nervous in that scene and I don’t know why. I think it was because I was claustrophobic ‘cause we were shooting inside a tent. I would forget lines; I was super fidgety and wanted to hit someone. We did three takes and Kristen was supposed to be asleep on the floor and, since she saw what was happening to me, halfway through the scene she suddenly opened her eyes and stared at me trying to make me laugh in what was supposed to be one of the more serious scenes of the entire movie. I wanted to strangle her the first couple of seconds but afterwards I couldn’t stop laughing.

You have a lot of scenes with Bella. Do you and Kristen prepare beforehand or do you wait until you’re on set and start shooting?
I prepare because for some reason I don’t understand anything and try to delve into the deep side of a character. However, for Kristen it seems obvious. Her mind works in a completely different way than mine and she can immediately feel things. I’m more cerebral but in the opposite way as her. I don’t feel confident unless I understand the reason why I do things.

What would you tell someone that asked you for a reason to go watch ‘Eclipse’?
Why not? (laughs) With the first and second films I knew the exact what to tell people to encourage them to go to the theaters, but now it’s more difficult. I suppose if you’re a fan of the saga there are a lot of things that you’ll love. However, if you’re not or don’t know what it’s about, it’s the most accessible of the three. It’s a sold story by itself and has a lot more action.

Robert is currently filming ‘Water For Elephants.’ He will also begin filming ‘Unbound Captives’ with Rachel Weiz and Hugh Jackman soon and has the premiere of ‘Bel Ami’ pending. Of course, in October he will once again get in Edward’s skin for the filming of ‘Breaking Dawn.’
