Jackson Rathbone's Band Playing TIFF
The Toronto International Film Festival takes over the city from Sept. 9 to 19, and as usual, there'll be plenty of musical events held in conjunction with it.
The Sadies, Radio Radio, Karkwa, Twilight actor Jackson Rathbone's 100 Monkeys and Fefe Dobson will perform at TIFF's special Bell Lightbox Block Party on Sept. 12 to celebrate the opening of the new TIFF Bell Lightbox.
It'll take over King Street West between John and Peter streets, and you'll be able to get free cupcakes, cherry pie and ice cream, AND there'll be a special surprise "international" Canadian act who'll be announced the day before the event. The act will be introduced by CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos.
We wonder who on earth it could be. There are quite a number of obvious choices in terms of Canadian acts who are well-known internationally who would be big enough to get announced the day before.
Drake instantly springs to mind, since he's not only a Torontonian, but he's also got an acting background, having appeared on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Broken Social Scene are obviously no strangers to playing events like these, and they've also appeared in this year's This Movie Is Broken, so they're also an obvious choice. They've also worked on film scores and their itinerary indicates they aren't doing anything on Sept. 12.
Since three Polaris Music Prize short-listed bands (The Sadies, Radio Radio and Karkwa) are already playing, it seems logical that the TIFF organizers would want to reach for another short-listed act, perhaps in an effort to say, "Hey, these are some of our country's best groups."
But there are other choices. Arcade Fire also have Sept. 12 off. They've leant their music to the trailer for Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are, and also spent the spring working on a short film with Jonze. That makes them another appropriate choice. We suspect they're busy, though.
