Nail Rock 'n' Roll style, THE RUNAWAYS way!
Spotted: Dakota Fanning hoovering up cocaine before putting on stockings, suspenders and a basque and writhing around a microphone. But don’t fret, dear; the 16-year-old hasn’t gone all Lindsay Lohan on us. In fact, this is a scene from her new film, ‘The Runaways’, which has just hit our cinema screens. And Grazia Daily is happy to report it was well worth the wait - if only for the outfits...
Here's a quick recap: Aged just 16, Joan Jett joined forces with four other teenage girls to form The Runaways, the first all-girl rock'n'roll band, and the film tells the tale of their sexual experimentation and addictions. So in celebration of the badass biopic, Grazia chatted with rock’s first lady herself - pick up the new issue (out today!) to read the full interview - and naturellement, she’s got us in the mood for some '70s hipster edge. So why not take inspiration from Kristen Stewart's surly portrayal of the punk-pop queen by digging out those Ray Ban Aviators and throwing on your rocker threads? Go on, you know you want to.
After all, as Grazia columnist Polly Vernon recently noted, the Dyke-con is having a moment. And what better icon of sexy subversiveness is there than Joan Jett? We're especially loving the skinny leather trousers and logo tees that K-Stew swaggers about in, nailing that boy-meets-girl attitude topped off with her raven shag and teenage scowl. In fact, Jett's no-frills aesthetic isn't far off the actress' own scruffy style. 'I felt comfortable in Joan's clothing,' Kristen confessed. 'It's like armour...With everything she wears she's not trying to be cool, she is trying to be tough.'
And from The Runaways to the runways. Isabel Marant, Balmain and Versace, among many more, featured a fierce army of motocross-clad models. So with the popularity of leather this A/W '10, Grazia Daily can't think of a better time to toughen up.
As for the more feminine among us, why not look to the band's very own Bridget Bardot...
Joan's bandmate Cherie Currie was the blonde babe of The Runaways, taking inspiration from David Bowie for her glittery stage outfits, which she designed herself. And Dakota Fanning really looks the part, confidently pulling off Cherie’s clingy silver jumpsuits and mega platform boots in the film, but it's her silk scarves à la Robert Cavalli and denim all-in-ones that Grazia Daily will be style-jacking.
And here's that aforementioned basque in all its glory, made for Dakota by, er, Trashy Lingerie. Now we know that underwear as outerwear is still all the rage, but quite frankly, this one's best left for the bedroom, non? Because, remember girls; it's all about the right balance. Joan and Cherie's style was in-your-face feisty while simultaneously too-cool-for-school; overtly sexual but still tweener-ish. Oh, Taylor Momsen must be tres jealous...
So fellow punk-wannabes, all that's left to do is check out the key pieces in the gallery below. Then rock'n'roll, here we come!
