Rumor Alert: Summit Working on First 'Twilight' Spin-Off

Rumor Alert: Summit Working on First 'Twilight' Spin-Off

Don't think you'll be washing that Twilight out of your hair by 2012! There's already a rumor going around about a big screen adaptation of the Twilight novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner in the works at Summit. What's Playing is reporting that an insider emailed, "It goes without saying Summit want to continue this franchise... Tanner is the one they're looking at post-Breaking Dawn... It's too early to talk casting, and everything we're hearing is just speculation or off a wish list, but I don't believe they plan on using the original actress, Jodelle Ferland, for the spin-off film. It's all about numbers and names -- you guys know that." WP passes this info on with a caveat that this tipster is "a first-time scooper" and to think of this as only a rumor but admits "it's too good not to print." Hey, we think so too!

In case you're not up on your Twilight tidbits, Tanner put in an appearance in Eclipse as a baby vamp who was supposed to be part of Victoria's army. Instead of fighting the Cullens, she was killed off in a most painful way by Jane (Dakota Fanning). Since this is a saga, you can read more -- way more -- about Bree at the Twilight wiki.

Interestingly enough, the names that the tipster threw out as part of the wish list for Bree were Chloe Moretz (Let Me In) and Dakota's little sister, Elle. Sounds like a little bit of wishful thinking as far as Moretz goes, since she seems to prefer big guns and gory bits instead of twee teens, but then again, this is all just speculation. (The photo above is Ferland as Bree Tanner inEclipse.)

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's book The Host is also being adapted for film. Deadline New York's Mike Fleming reported in March that producer Steve Schwartz told him they were hoping to shoot the sci-fi film "in early 2011." Casting and pre-production began in April.

Have you read Bree Tanner? Do you think it would make a good Twilight spin-off? Does Meyer have more in store?
