''Eclipse'' DVD Review by Film Shaft
The Twilight Saga feeds into the classic love triangle and is real archetypal stuff. Fans embraced it on such strong terms it was likely to rile the culture police. Sometimes it is hard to understand what the majority of critics are sneering at. Its popularity or the unashamed romantic intensity?
David Slade brings a sleek and creative eye to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse making his entry the best one in the series. So why the snooty critics carry on treating Stephenie Meyer’s material like its portent to the end of the world, the rest of us can get on with watching the films.
Take it seriously if you want to or enjoy it as a corny, old-fashioned love story, it makes no odds. The Twilight Saga has entered popular culture and its here to stay. One wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if movie critics came around to its charms in the end.
Third time round and Edward and Bella are going through a tough patch. Jacob just won’t leave them alone and he opens his heart to the girl he loves. Problem is – and it’s the tragedy for Jacob – Bella and Edward are meant to be. It’s, like, written in the stars. Unrequited love is like being kicked in the balls repeatedly until you throw up. Sad stuff, but it offers a tumultuous course for events.
Not only are romantic entanglements confusing things – Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) is out for revenge and wants Bella dead. She raises an army of teen vamps lead by Riley (Xavier Samuel) to descend on Forks, Washington, and kill, like, everyone.
The mountaintop battle is very well-staged and Slade isn’t afraid to throw in some humour here and there amidst all the scowling and heavy hearts. The gag about Jacob being hotter than Edward is funny and so, too, Edward’s quip about Jacob not wearing a shirt.
This DVD release is packed with an array of extras to keep twihards happy for a few days. There’s mini featurettes, an abundance of deleted scenes and anything else you can shake a stick at. David Slade was a great choice of director and it really comes across in the extra feature segments.
Rating: ★★★☆☆
