Robert Pattinson to Star in Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis?

Robert Pattinson to Star in Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis?

From Deadline
EXCLUSIVE: Robert Pattinson has booked his first major lead for when he completes The Twilight Saga. Pattinson will star in Cosmopolis, the Don DeLillo novel adaptation that David Cronenberg wrote and will direct. Pattinson, who just starred with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Fox 2000's Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the  Sara Gruen novel Water For Elephants, will play Eric Packer. A financial wunderkind, Packer risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. His deed puts him in the crosshairs for assassination in a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. Most of the scenes in the book take place in the limousine that transports Packer from place to place. Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti are also reportedly doing the film, but those same reports had Colin Farrell poised to take the lead role.

As Pattinson and his Twilight Saga castmates plan their careers after the series is completed--Bill Condon is directing the final film right now, Pattinson is following a path based on strong filmmakers and tasteful source material. He took the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg's work and an admirer of DeLillo's books. He's repped by WME and 3 Arts.

From Gossip Cop :
Robert Pattinson has reportedly signed on to star in David Cronenberg’s upcoming adaptation of Cosmopolis.
It’s not a done deal quite yet.
A source in Pattinson’s camp tells Gossip Cop they’re in “negotiations.”
Barring a hitch in the talks, Cosmopolis will be Pattinson’s next major role.
The movie, based on a novel by Don DeLillo, follows a young financial whiz named Eric Packer as he journeys across a major city by limo during one tumultuous day.
Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti are reportedly attached to the project.

Will Robert Pattinson spend a day having lots of sex, shooting someone and losing billions of dollars when he finishes up with Twilight?
On film he may…
While a report today claims Pattinson will star in Cosmopolis for edgy director David Cronenberg, I'm told the deal isn't done just yet. In other words, everyone wants it to happen, but they're still in negotiations.
If it happens, Pattinson will be taking a very big (and very smart) step away from his vampire alter-ego. Based on Don De Lillo's novel of the same name, Cosmopolis centers around Eric Packer, multi-billionaire finance man (that would be Rob's part) who finds himself targeted by assassins after he loses a ton of money by betting against the rise of the yen.
The book takes place over the span of just one day with Packer crisscrossing through New York City in a high-tech limo to get a haircut at his father's favorite barber shop.
"He has sex with two women, his art consultant and a bodyguard," reads a review in Publisher's Weekly. "He is hit in the face with a pie by a protester. He knows he is being stalked, and the novel stages a final convergence between the ex-tycoon and his stalker."
Oh, he also shoots someone as the limo driver has to navigate around a presidential motorcade, an attack by anarchists and a rapper's funeral. Packer has several meetings in the limo with folks like his doctor and some finance men.
Did I mention this is a very big step away from Pattinson's vampire alter-ego?
Other names reportedly attached to the flick are Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Colin Farrell and Paul Giamatti.

From The Playlist
We have to admit, our first words upon hearing this were: “What the shit?” Haters gonna hate, but like it or not, Robert Pattinson is in a position to get things green lit, as he is taking over for Colin Farrell in David Cronenberg‘s “Cosmopolis.”
Based on Don DeLillo‘s book of the same name, the film follows 24 hours in the life of a newly married billionaire Eric Packer (Pattinson) as he cheats on his wife, is pursued by a stalker, gets attacked by a protester and gradually loses his entire fortune over the course of a single day.  The adaptation was penned by Cronenberg himself and cast is currently rounded out by Marion Cotillard who will play Pattinson’s wife and Paul Giamatti as one of the two men stalking the billionaire. Let’s just slow this down for a second: Robert Pattinson and Marion Cotillard are going to play a married couple? Please.
So why has Farrell bailed? Well, with the actor recently signed on to star in the “Total Recall” reboot that is scheduled to go in front of cameras this spring, roughly around the same time as Cronenberg’s film and we figure the bigger paycheck won out. The current plan is for Pattinson to finish his work on “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” with Bill Condon and move right on over to Cronenberg’s film.
Well, we suppose we’re glad “Cosmopolis” is still getting made but we think the Pattinson casting is totally, totally wrong. But maybe he’ll prove us wrong…..right?

The actor will step into the role that originally was to be played by Colin Farrell.

Martin Katz is also producing Cosmopolis. Renee Tab is exec producing.

Cronenberg is producing with Paulo Branco of Alfama Films.

From Movieline :
I won’t take up more of your time explaining why Cosmopolis is maybe the fifth or sixth most optimal Don DeLillo novel for a screen adaptation by David Cronenberg, but two new developments surrounding the looonnng-gestating project most definitely bear noting. Needless to say, Robert Pattinson’s casting as paranoiac, Manhattan-crossing, billionaire-in-the-unmaking Eric Packer is pretty important. But are we ready for the consequences?
To wit, are we ready for the collision of a voracious Twilight saga/Stephenie Meyer readership and the dense, oblique, conspiratorial post-9/11 ravings of arguably America’s greatest living novelist? For the record, I’m not saying one can’t handle the other — they’re all just books in the end, and Meyer’s key demo is nearing college age — but when the flawed, dated Cosmopolis now flies off the shelf, leaving Twihards to possibly settle for, say, The Body Artist, Libra, Mao II or (please God please God please) White Noise as some kind of clued-in tonal surrogate, are we looking at a new generation of DeLillo readers? To say nothing of new Cronenberg viewers? I don’t think the reigning bards of spiritual disaffection and body horror could possibly have had better news from Hollywood today. Relevancy for all!
All of which hinges on whether or not Cronenberg actually makes this thing, which the filmmaker’s had in development since at least 2007. Colin Farrell reportedly had to drop out so Pattinson could pick up the part of Packer, a young asset manager whose attempt to cross Manhattan in his opulent limousine (to get a haircut of all things; don’t tell the Twihards) is met with financial ruin, sexual crisis, assassination threats, riots, and breaches in his soundproofed vehicle walls. Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti have been linked to Cosmopolis in the past as well, but they’re not officially confirmed to join Pattinson in the project. We’ll see. For now, this happened. There’s probably a DeLillo novel in the whole scenario itself.

David Cronenberg and Don DeLillo.
Right away, those two names attached to a project guarantee my interest.  Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors, a brilliant man with a savage eye for human behavior, and DeLillo is an amazing author.  His books are black and painful and funny and horrifying, and each of them serves as a sort of snapshot of a time and place.
So when I read that Cronenberg is going to make DeLillo's Cosmopolis as a film, I'm very interested.  Then I read a little further and I see Paul Giamatti and Marion Cotillard are also attached, and that's cool.  Good cast, great actors, seem like they'd be a good fit with Cronenberg.  And who else is starring?
Oh, yeah… that's right.  Robert Pattinson, in his first big role after he wraps work on the last of the "Twilight" films.
It's a huge role for him, and it's an interesting moment for Cronenberg and DeLillo.  I may love these guys, but their cultural currency isn't what it could be.  Not a lot of teenagers out there are rabidly devouring "White Noise" or "Libra" these days or tracking down DVDs of "The Brood" and "Videodrome."  Robert Pattinson has a certain amount of cultural cache that automatically brings fresh eyes to something like this.
And he might be great.  I wouldn't be able to judge that yet based on the "Twilight" films because anybody with nice cheekbones could do what he's done in those films.  They haven't really taxed him as a performer in any way.  What they did was grant him an audience that will now be at least a little more willing to try something unconventional because he's in it.
The book deals with a crisis point in world economics as seen through the filter of one man, Eric Packer, and his journey across town for a haircut.  Yep, seriously.  And much of the book is set within Packer's luxury stretch limo during the drive through a futuristic Manhattan.  It's a wild book, with tons of characters and storylines criss-crossing, and it sounds like Cronenberg, who's been working on the film since 2009, is finally getting ready to put it in front of the camera.
Pattinson has to finish work on "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" for director Bill Condon first, but it sounds like this may be the film he makes immediately after.
We'll keep you posted on "Cosmopolis," and in the meantime, I am dying to hear what all the "Twilight" fans who ran out to buy the book today think of it.

Robert Pattinson has a shiny new project to follow "Breaking Dawn": The young actor will replace Colin Farrell in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," a futuristic action flick set in the banking world.
The leading role will see Pattinson -- recently tapped to be a presenter at the Golden Globe Awards -- playing a risk-taking trader who loses a major gamble on foreign currency. The flub makes him an assassination target and leads to an inevitable chase across New York, the Wrap reports.
Marion Cotillard will play Pattinson's wife, with actor Paul Giamatti nabbing a supporting role.
Pattinson is currently shooting the final chapters in "The Twilight Saga," which he'll break from next week to present at the Golden Globes.
