“Welcome to the Rileys” — a powerful drama about finding hope in the most unusual places — makes its Northern Arizona premiere in Sedona on Tuesday, Feb. 8 and in Flagstaff on Wednesday, Feb. 9. There will be two screenings of the film at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Sedona Six Theatres on Tuesday and one screening of the film at 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Flagstaff 11 Theatres on Wednesday.

This special engagement is presented by the Sedona International Film Festival and Harkins Theatres.

The film features a stellar ensemble cast including Golden Globe winner James Gandolfini, Academy Award nominee Melissa Leo and Kristen Stewart. Critics are raving about the film and the performances by the three leads. Variety Magazine says “Gandolfini and Leo are downright dynamite”, and MTV movies raves that “Stewart is utterly fearless”. The Huffington Post applauds “three beautifully brave performances”.

“Welcome to the Rileys” is an emotional journey that takes us through grief, self-reinvention and healing.

The Rileys have been struggling in their marriage since losing their teenage daughter eight years prior. Once a happily married and loving couple, Lois (Melissa Leo) and Doug (James Gandolfini) have grown distant. Lois has become agoraphobic and won't leave the house while Doug tries to stay away, finding their home depressing.

Looking to get away, Doug goes on a business trip to New Orleans. He meets Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a teenage runaway. Despite her unsettling demeanor, Doug immediately recognizes an innocence in Mallory. He realizes she is in desperate need of paternal guidance, something he has been longing to provide. The two form a platonic bond. The opportunity to care and protect Mallory supplants the void Doug's marriage has left in his heart, and brings new meaning to his life. Doug decides to sell his business and stay in New Orleans to give Mallory the attention and help she can't bring herself to ask for.

Lois overcomes her phobia and ventures to New Orleans to reclaim her marriage. What initially seems to be the final straw that will derail their marriage turns out to be the inspiration for Lois and Doug to renew their love for each other.

Jake Scott directed “Welcome to the Rileys” from a screenplay by Ken Hixon.

“I was interested in doing something quite real about ordinary people,” Scott says. “Many things about this script spoke to me. It’s a film about learning to live with uncontrollable forces.”

Scott says he was especially impressed by the script’s moving portrayal of a family in crisis.

“ ‘Welcome to the Rileys’ brings together three well-respected performers in roles that allow them to create characters far different from what audiences have come to expect from them,” said Scott. “All three went deep into themselves and I think they may be playing more themselves than we’ve seen before.”

The title sponsor for the event is Arizona Elder Care. Harkins Theatres is the producing partner of the event along with the Sedona International Film Festival.
