Instrument ‘switcheroo’ mark of 100 Monkeys
The band consisting of Jackson Rathbone, Jerad Anderson, Uncle, Ben Graupner and Ben Johnson acts “crazy, like a bunch of monkeys” on stage, Rathbone told the Chronicle.
This is how they created the “monkey switcheroo”: Between songs, the different band members will get up and switch instruments.
“We all know how to play them, so it keeps things exciting for the audience,” Graupner said.
Members of this unsigned “funk rock” band met in Los Angeles, where they combined all the types of music the individuals have previously played.
“The fact that we’re all crazy, and that we combined different genres of music is how we came up with the name,” Rathbone said. “It just kind of — fit.”
The band’s latest album, “Liquid Zoo,” was released in June.
According to information from the band’s official website, www.100monkeysmusic.com, RollingStone.com has described 100 Monkeys music as “tribal sounds with vocals recalling Jim Morrison’s baritone croon,” and MTV.com pronounced them a blend of “Iggy Pop with the Raconteurs.”
Rathbone’s talents include acting in “The Last Airbender,” but he is perhaps best known for his role as Jasper Hale in the “Twilight” saga. Graupner’s acting credits include “Trapped in the 5150” and “Devolved”; Anderson’s other interests include Wayne/Lauren Film Company, and Johnson is also part of the Stevedores.
“Our fan base is growing,” Johnson said, “it’s a really exciting thing to see.”
Before the July 28 show, a line formed outside the Orpheum where most people either had on a 100 Monkeys shirt, or had some type of monkey-related memorabilia.
However, the road to Ybor wasn’t all fun and games.
“We met the ghost in Detroit,” Johnson said. “Different parts of our set randomly went out. First the mics, then the drums, then all the lights themselves. It was a crazy experience.”
Apart from the “monkey switcheroo,” the band has one other factor that keeps the show exciting.
“We let the fans pick what one song is going to be about,” Rathbone said.
The song topic at the Orpheum was “7 Minutes.” During this song, Rathbone was put on the spot and made to create lyrics for the song.
“My favorite song to play is the one that isn’t written yet,” Uncle said.
“We’re not trying to aspire to be another artist,” Rathbone said, “We’re just... 100 Monkeys.”
