Las Vegas Weekly : Monkeys! Rock! Charity!

Las Vegas Weekly : Monkeys! Rock! Charity!

100 Monkeys are ready to rock out Friday night at the Fremont Street Experience! But before you envision a frenzied zoo at the Downtown tourist trap, calm down. These aren’t real primates, they’re the L.A.-based funk rock band fronted by Jackson Rathbone, and they’ll perform in front of the Flightlinez zip lines.

Calendar
100 Monkeys
August 26, 7 to 10 p.m., free
Attraction sales from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. benefit the "Rock'n Zip" grant.
Flightlinez, 410-7999

If Rathbone’s last name sounds a bit familiar, it might be because when he isn’t singing and/or playing the guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, mandolin, trumpet or harmonica, he’s acting. The multitalented performer is most notable for his work in the Twilight saga, where he portrays Jasper Cullen, a vampire with the ability to affect others’ moods.

But really, that’s the last reason to watch 100 Monkeys perform. There are, however, a few we at Weekly would like to highlight:

•1. It’s free. Yes – FREE!

•2. Throughout the concert, all proceeds from the zip line attraction will benefit the Fender Music Foundation’s “Rock’n Zip” grant. Fender also is donating a guitar, signed by the band, to be sold on eBay. The funds raised from both of these philanthropic endeavors will be used for music programs in the Downtown district.

•3. Rathbone isn’t the only versatile musician. 100 Monkeys makes it a point to switch up their instrumentation, exchanging their axes between songs.

•4. The onstage chaos doesn’t end at swapping guitars for drumsticks, either. The band is known for their completely random, written-on-the-spot tunes. 100 Monkeys takes an idea from their audience at each show and then improvs an entire song based on it.

•5. Did we mention it’s free?

So if your Friday night is still wide open, consider the musical experimentation that is a 100 Monkeys live show. It’s cost-effective, and should you venture upstairs to the zip lines, a great way to give back to your local music community.
