Jackson Interview with La Butaca

Jackson Interview with La Butaca

We’re a few days from the premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1″, the beggining of the end of the love between Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. The anxiety of the fans, maybe, got parcially satisfied by the visit of two members of the Cullen clan to Madrid.

We had the opportunity to talk to Nikki Reed and Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper Hale. As happened to his partner, his image is too far from the cold character to whom he gives life in the movies.

Did you know about the books before starting to work in the movies?
I got to know about them when I was about to prepare my audition for the movies.

Is your character too different from the books to the movies?
Yes and no. Actually, it’s been of great help, and we’ve always had access to Stephenie Meyer. I remember the first scene we had with her, I asked her about everything all the time, explaining my perspective about the character. And another important thing is that Jasper is from South like me, that helped me to identify with him.

What was the most complicated thing for you?
All the part of make-up is a bit hard..

Nikki Reed told the same.
Really? I’m not surprised. Every morning, 1 hour and half getting your make-up done, and then getting awkward cause you can’t see right, can’t move right, can’t touch your face..not to mention you’re constantly crying because of the contact lens, they don’t let the oxygen get to your eyes. But well, everything for the saga.

What do you do in the breaks between the scenes shooting, once you’re so stuck?
I never get bored, I always find something to get entertained. When I started to work in it, I’d save all the diets they gave me and would buy a musical instrument. A guitar, a banjo, a mandolim, a drum..I always take some of them with me in the shootings and play, though all the make-up. And I love to read.

You really love music, you could’ve also dedicated to it.
I love music, for sure. Tonight I watched a spectacle of flamenco in Madrid and loved the guitar, it’s incredible. I’ve composed some stuff for bands. The music and the cinema walk together, in my opinion, and that’s this way since the same time of mute cine.

And where the wish of being an actor comes from?
Well, because of the girls..when I was at school I used to help in the theater plays, with the lights and stuff, behind the scenes, you know. And I realized that the girls looked too much at the actors. Then I said: “Why not?”, and soon I realized tht they actually look more at the musicians..

It seems it’s passed an age since the last movie. What are your memories of the first days?
Actually, I remember it was a movie like any other. A normal shooting. But when we’d start “New Moon” it was a phenomenon, with all these fans, it’s level got much higher because of them, for we couldn’t disappoint them. In those cases it’s not as much about the artist as the receptors of the product.

About that, we can be happy, because the basis has grown up progressively.
Totally. We never know what’s gonna happen with those things, but seeing the success of every movie gets us excited to make the next one. Besides that, after playing so many times the same character, it turns into a part of you, everything gets much more natural. And I always keep something of the characters that I play. The darkest parts I eliminate, of course.

Some people say that the focus of the saga is very conservative. What do you think about that?
I think it offers something different of what we see nowadays. Today, in the most of the movies, there’s a sex scene just in the beggining. But here what matters is the romantism of the history. In my country the television is full of constant sex and violence. What matters in “Twilight” are the relationships among people, the sex is secondary. It’s cool for me.

What about the goodbye to “Twilight”?
I’m taking great friends, because during such a long shooting there’s a time when we felt like we grew up together. It’s been a very big process, since those first days in Portland where we talked to each other anonymously. We got connected very fast and turned into very good friends. The best is nothing changed in all this time, we’ve been the same. This is the hardest part, saying goodbye to people, because of what the movies are, actually, in the end you feel like finishing it.

Where do you believe this present fascination for vampires comes from?
I think the secret is the immortality, and the fact that there’s a big variety of vampires in every class. In my opinion, the interesting thing in “Twilight” is that it comes with the idea that living forever doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have love in your life, it has no sense.

What are you planning to do now?
I’ll try different realities, do new things that I haven’t done yet..look for new perspectives that make me grow up as an artist and as a person. I like dark characters, but extreme. I don’t see myself in love stories, I like sarcasm, the policy plots..

Any news about the sequel of “The Last Airbender”?
I wish I’d have it, but I can’t tell anything because I don’t know anything about it.
