"Bel Ami" Review by Sunday World (UK)
Bel Ami doesn’t have any sex appeal
THE STARS: Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci.
THE STORY: A poor but handsome ex-soldier is introduced to Parisian society and a host of stunning women in this period drama that mixes sex and politics.
ROBERT PATTINSON sets out to prove there's more to him than a surly vampire in this racy adaptation of the classic story. But he and the well-known cast are not enough to spark this unfocused movie.
Set in 1890s Paris, Pattinson plays Georges Duroy, a poor but young and very attractive man who is has ambitions of insinuating
himself into a better social class. This movie suffers from being devoid of the sexual tension and all-round shenanigans crucial to making a story like this work.
It looks pretty, but Bel Ami lacks the vital sexiness.
