"Water for Elephants" DVD Review by Killer Film

Director Francis Lawrence paints a lush portrait of circus life during the Great Depression in the film adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel Water for Elephants. It’s a gripping look at the gritty world behind the glamorous big top. And to survive in that world, you have to stand up for what you believe in.

The Film:

The story told in Water for Elephants goes far beyond a simple romance between the characters of Jacob and Marlena. It touches on animal cruelty, inhumane treatment of workers, poverty and survival. It just so happens that two of the characters fall in love after bonding over their love of animals.

Lawrence’s film does a fantastic job of subtly describing circuses in the early 1930s. To the outside world, it was full of glamour and grandeur. But the reality was quite different. Part of the ringmaster’s job was to create the illusion. Yes, the animals may be beautiful, but they were fed poorly and packed into train cars with barely any room. Lawrence captures that by making everything just slightly less than perfect – chipped paint, worn costumes, small tears in the tent. And he weaves it all together with beautiful cinematography that makes it almost feel like you’re watching a painting.

The cast gives fantastic performances in this film. Robert Pattinson brilliantly captures Jacob’s wide-eyed eagerness and love of the animals. What I liked so much about his performance is that even though he’s in the lead – this movie is about Jacob – it never feels like he takes over the movie. He works well with the other actors to create a pleasing ensemble. Reese Witherspoon does a great job of keeping Marlena down to earth while still working in some 1930s Hollywood glamour. Christoph Waltz is slightly terrifying as August. As both ringmaster and Marlena’s husband, he is overbearingly controlling. But the interesting part of Waltz’s performance is the touches of humanity he brings to his character. At times, you at least understand where August is coming from, even without agreeing with his tactics.

The DVD:

Water for Elephants is available on DVD and Blu-ray disc with a digital copy. In addition, Target sells a combo pack that includes the DVD, Blu-ray disc and digital copy in one package.

Audio/Video: The audio and video are good. It’s in widescreen, and the images are quite clear. The audio is crisp and clear as well.

Commentaries: The only commentary track is with Lawrence and writer Richard LaGravenese. It’s an interesting look at the technical aspects of the film. With that said, I would have loved to see a commentary track with Pattinson, Witherspoon and Waltz.

Special Features: The special features include a spotlight on Pattinson, a feature on Witherspoon, Secrets of the Big Top (a look at how the film came together) and The Traveling Show – Page to Screen (a look at how the film was adapted from the novel). All are worth viewing if you’re interested in knowing more about the performers or how the film was made.

Conclusion: This story is about much more than two people falling in love. It has a depth to it that is sometimes rare to find. I think this is definitely worth viewing.

Jacqueline West Talks About "Water for Elephants" and Robert

In Water For Elephants, costume designer Jacqueline West helps Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz to recreate the whimsical glamour of 1930’s circus life. Jacqueline, a fashion designer by trade, got her start working with director Philip Kaufman on The Unbearable Lightness Of Being starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Since then she has gone on to design costumes for award winning films including The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. We spoke to Jacqueline about what it was like to run away with the circus and design for the retro style of the era.

Real Style: What were the challenges creating circus and period costumes in Water For Elephants?

Jacqueline West: The main challenge was having to make it all. It just doesn’t exist in costume houses. The genuine articles just didn’t survive. I guess it was all the wear they got in real circuses. Near the end of the shoot though an old friend of mine from where I have a ranch in the Sierra Foothills visited me on set with a stash of maybe five perfectly preserved costumes she found in an old warehouse in Oakland. They were gorgeous. I bought them all and somehow managed to get them into the Weehawken parade scene.

Real Style: What was it like was it working with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson?

Jacqueline West: It was a treat working with them both. Reese was lovely, collaborative and game about wearing all the very slinky and revealing performance costumes and the very bare thirties gowns and had the perfect body to make them all look alluring. We watched thirties films together and she studied the film goddesses of the era and really got the body language down perfectly. She’s a fabulous actress. It’s wonderful working with good actors! Rob was wonderful. I’d only seen him as a very pale vampire. It was so much fun to see how manly and handsome and period he could become in thirties working class “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” roustabout clothes. He too is very serious about his acting and wore them so well and managed to be so of the period.

As far as Robert Pattinson is concerned, we know very well that he's wonderful, talented and charming. And not that we get tired of mentioning it, frequently, but it's nice when other not-as-rabid fans go out of their way to say nice things about our Rob.

Case in point, the cast and crew of "Water For Elephants," which arrives on DVD today. We got our hot little hands on an EXCLUSIVE behind-the-scenes featurette from the weepy, 1920s circus romance in which Rob's co-star and director speak to the heartthrob's serious talent.

Director Francis Lawrence admitted that finding an actor in his early 20s to play Jacob was a tough one.

"It was really tricky because a lot of the guys that are that age still really felt like boys to me," Francis explained. "When I met Rob I really had only known him from 'Twilight,' and I didn't know what to expect."

"With Jacob, I thought I could really add something to the part," Rob said about what initially interested him in the role. "And then I read the script and it seemed like they'd added more to it, definitely in his relationship with Marlena, and it made me more intrigued."

"WFE" producer Andrew Tennenbaum added that Rob had a mature insight into the character, while co-star Reese Witherspoon complimented his sensitivity and nuanced performance.

"He has a lot of conflict in the movie, and Rob was great at having that very thoughtful way about conveying that about the character," she said.
