On the occasion of the release in May, of the movie "Water for Elephants", Editions Albin Michel published in April a new edition of this book about the circus years of the Great Depression in the United States.

Ideal for plunge into the atmosphere of the circus travelers of the 1930s, particularly dark period in American history.

Please note the reproductions of photos from Ringling circus of this time opening each chapter.

During the Great Depression in the thirties, trains of small circuses crisscross America. Jacob Jankowski, a penniless orphan, jump aboard one of the Benzini Brothers "greatest show on earth".

Hired as a trainer, he will discover the sordid to the scenes where all men and beasts, are similarly exploited, abused.

Sara Gruen make live with an incredible talent this world of sequins and misery that unites Jacob, Marlene beautiful horsewoman, and Rosie, the elephant that no one previously has been prepared within an unlikely trio. More than just a novel about the circus, Water for Elephants is the inspiring story of two people lost in a harsh and violent world where love is a luxury that few can afford.

  2. This book was an overall success in my experience with it. The book's main character is someone that almost anyone can relate to, even if his experiences aren't the same as the reader's. Although there were several scenes that were a bit too sexually graphic for my taste, the pure emotion portrayed in the characters pulled me into the story.
