Remakes and sequels top 2011 hot movie list
Six of the fifteen movies on Entertainment Weekly’s recently published hot list of 2011 are sequels in well-established franchises. Of the six named, only “Cars 2” and “The Hangover 2” are the second in a series. Both the newest in the “Scream” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchises are on number four.
Even some sequels have sequels. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2” is the sequel to the seventh film in the Harry Potter series. It will bring the total number of films made in conjunction with the books to a whopping eight. Having also chosen to break its final installment into two feature films, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn 1”, will release before its own sequel, though the movie itself is the fourth in the Twilight series.
Among the remaining nine films are remakes of well-known characters. The “Green Lantern”, “Captain America: The First Avenger”, and “Red Riding Hood” are new interpretations of otherworldly characters. Even “Arthur”, which is rooted quite firmly in this world, is a remake of the 1981 hit starring Dudley Moore.
Any originality that remains is confined to a short list of never-before-made book adaptations. Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” and Sarah Gruen’s “Water for Elephants” may be the most promising two.
