R. Patts takes the lead in Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’

Here’s an interesting choice by a young actor making interesting choices — post ‘Twilight’ fame.

Robert Pattinson has signed on to play the lead in edgy auteur David Cronenberg’s next film, “Cosmopolis.” The “History of Violence” and “Scanners” “The Fly” and “Videodrome” director has been a hot property in the latter stages of his long career, and this seems like a canny, adventurous move for Pattinson.

But look at his other post-Edward choices. While he may not be knocking the ball out of the park with his performances and the movies aren’t big performers, he is consistently seeking challenging work, dragging at least a few of his fans to see films that they wouldn’t have bothered with. How many “Twilight” fans had ever heard of Salvador Dali before Pattinson made a tiny movie about him?

Paul Giamati and Marion Cotillard are rumored co-stars in “Cosmopolis,” based on Don DeLillo’s novel about a day in the life of a younger New Economy billionaire, a day in which all manner of high profile stresses (a rapper’s funeral, a presidential meet and greet, the collapse of a currency) bring it all down around his ears.

I can see Pattinson as a callow, rich guy, but have a hard time placing him in this part, which seems bigger than he typically plays things. But that’s kind of the idea. So a risk taken, a worthy director supported, well done.
