‘Water For Elephants’ International Trailer Offers Circus Romance

An international trailer for ‘Water for Elephants’ features Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon as star-crossed lovers that meet while working for a 1930s-era circus.

Robert Pattinson’s shifts his longing gaze from Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan to Reese Witherspoon’s graceful circus dancer in this spring’s Water for Elephants, an adaptation of the 2006 New York Times bestselling (and Oprah favorite) novel by Sara Gruen.

A charming international trailer has been released for the pic, which weaves a whimsical coming of age tale with romance and intrigue, set against the backdrop of an old-fashioned, Depression-era circus.

An elderly Jacob Jankowski (Hal Holbrook) recalls his days of lore in Water for Elephants, which recounts the experiences of a young Jacob (Pattinson) after he abandoned his veterinary studies in the wake of his parents’ untimely death in the 1930s. The youthful Jacob takes up a job with a traveling circus and soon falls in love with its star performer, Marlena Rosenbluth (Witherspoon) -- a difficult situation, since Marlena is also married to August (Christoph Waltz), the show’s “charismatic but dangerous” ringmaster.

Music video director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) was at the helm of the Water for Elephants adaptation, with script credit going to screenwriter Richard LaGravenese (Alfonso Cuarón’s A Little Princess). The combination of LaGravenese’s penchant for adapting melodramatic literature and Lawrence’s brand of visual flair looks to have yielded some nice results, judging by this new theatrical preview.

Barcelona’s “Please Don’t Go” adds a pleasantly warm, rhythmic touch to the imagery of trains traveling under starlit skies and circus folk at work -- pitching tents, caring for animals, and threatening upstart veterinarians that put the moves on their boss’s wife ;-) . The end product could be a bit too soapy and over-the-top in its whimsy, but the Water for Elephants preview is enjoyable enough.

Pattinson will be in the presence of Oscar-winners like Witherspoon and Waltz -- or, as he’s known nowadays, Bloodnofsky -- and hopefully should be a bit more expressive than he is in the Twilight movies. At the very least, it’s good to see him with a darker complexion and cleaner haircut.

Water for Elephants arrives in theaters around the U.S. on April 22nd, 2011.
