Sundance Drama ‘Camp X-Ray’ Acquired by IFC Films

Sundance Drama ‘Camp X-Ray’ Acquired by IFC Films

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Peter Sattler’s directorial debut “Camp X-Ray,” which stars Kristen Stewart as a Guantanamo Bay guard, the company announced Thursday.

Sattler also wrote the film, which was produced by Gina Kwon and executive produced by Emmy Ellison, Lindsay Williams, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, David Gordon Green and Sophia Lin.

Payman Maadi and Lane Garrison co-star in the movie, which premiered in competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Stewart plays a young woman who joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots, but ends up as a rookie guard at Guantanamo Bay. Her mission is far from black and white, as she is surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive male squadmates. When she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees (Maadi), both of their worlds are forever shifted.

''Camp X-Ray" Reviews

''Camp X-Ray" Reviews

Kristen Stewart’s new Guantanamo Bay drama “Camp X-Ray” premiered to mixed reactions following its Sundance Film Festival debut.

Some audience members at Friday’s screening “loved” the fictional war drama, starring the “Twilight” actress, while other criticized the film for being “too slow.”

The film, playing in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the festival, takes place in the infamous U.S. prison camp Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and follows a young military guard (Stewart) who begins to question the facility’s abusive treatment of its detainees after she forms a bond with one of the Islamic prisoners.

Director Peter Settler, during his introduction to the film, said he wanted to focus on humanity, not politics, while making “Camp X-Ray,” which opens with footage from the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York.

“We wanted to make a movie that is not propaganda,” the writer/director told the audience.

Stewart, on hand for a post-screening Q&A, said she spent hours watching GITMO documentaries and was even trained by a “really awesome marine named JB who…whipped me into shape.”

“She had aspects that I am and really felt,” the actress said of her character in the movie. “My prep was figuring out who she was.”

Insiders at the festival suggested to Variety that the film would likely sell to a small distributor for limited theatrical/VOD release.

“Camp X-Ray,” co-starring Payman Moaadi and Lane Garrison, was exec produced by David Gordon Green.

Kristen Stewart found common ground between herself and the taciturn Guantanamo Bay Marine guard she played in Camp X-Ray, which premiered Friday at the Sundance Film Festival.

"She had aspects that I have and that I really felt," said Stewart of Pvt. Amy Cole, assigned to guard the detainees held for years at Guantanamo Bay. The film is a fictional story about a friendship that develops between Cole and Ali, a suspected terrorist imprisoned on the U.S. Naval base since shortly after Sept. 11, 2001.

Stewart spoke of portraying someone not so different from herself, presumably in contrast to playing a teenager in love with a vampire in the Twilight movies.

When asked about her experiences filming, she joked: "I forgot how to turn left. I was constantly rotating," referring to her character doing rounds in a small cellblock, often pushing a cart of library books.

Robert Redford’s two-week celebration of independent cinema kicks off its 30th year Thursday in Park City, Utah, with a lineup that includes 117 feature films. One of them is “Camp X-Ray,” in which Stewart plays against type as a Guantanamo Bay guard who befriends a prisoner.

Stewart, who was last at the festival in 2010 when she was promoting her role as Joan Jett in “The Runaways,” says “Camp X-Ray” was one of the rare scripts she’d read that made her want to work again after her two-year acting hiatus following the “Twilight” movies.

“At my age it’s difficult to find stuff that isn’t completely derivative,” said the 23-year-old in a recent interview. “Most parts are imitating something else that was popular.”

With “Snow White and the Huntsman 2″ coming in 2015, Stewart’s big-budget franchise days are far from over. “But it’s a little bit more difficult to create the environment that I thrive in on a bigger movie,” she explains. “I prefer doing smaller ones. They’re quicker. I like intensive things and then I like to walk away.”

''Payman's character is this kind of loud-mouthed, super-talkative detainee, so he's always trying to get this girl to talk,'' says writer-director Sattler, who says the film isn't super-political or preachy. ''And she's trying to be the best soldier she can be. Every time those two had a scene together, you just can't take your eyes off of them.''

Peter Sattler Talks About ''Camp X-Ray" with Fanspired

In your own words can you describe what this film is about ?
At its most basic level, CAMP X-RAY is a story about two people trapped in a very strange place that manage to find a connection with each other. But of course, it’s about a lot of other things too. It’s about a young woman who leaves her home for the first time. A woman who joins the army to find purpose, only to end up in a place where that purpose couldn’t be less pure. It’s about a man desperate to reach out beyond his world as well. To experience something outside the routine of his tiny cell.

What was the inspiration for CAMP X-RAY ?
It all started with the book cart. I saw some documentary footage of a guard and a detainee arguing about the different books on the library cart. Their exchange was so mundane, so idiosyncratic, so utterly ridiculous given the context of where they were. And in that exact moment, I could see an entire film. One hallway, two people, and the utterly absurd relationship that they are forced to have. And that’s what I was drawn to. I just wanted to put those two characters in a room and see what they said to each other, which is very much the way I started writing. Having no direction at all. Just dropping them in a test tube and seeing what words came out of their mouths. And the more banal their conversation, the more interested I was in it, because it was the absurdity of these moments that most perfectly captured my feelings on Guantanamo Bay. I very much wanted to paint our portrayal of this place in stark absurdist colors.

This will be your first appearance at Sundance for your film ''Camp X-Ray'' also starring Kristen Stewart. Give us the breakdown of how this all happened.
I'm super excited to be attending Sundance for the first time, especially with so many great films making their debuts there in the past few years. I had just returned to L.A. from filming ''When the Game Stands Tall'' when I got the audition for ''Camp X-Ray''. When I saw the breakdown for my character, Jackson, I saw an opportunity to bring a little lightness to a somewhat heavy script. When I went in to audition for Richard Hicks, I felt an immediate connection to the character Peter Sattler had written. Jackson's a big, kind-hearted jokester but he's also tough and responsible at the same time. I literally just went in the audition room and had fun. I didn't think much about it afterward since this business is such a numbers game so I was pleasantly surprised when I got the call from my agent that I had booked it. ''Camp X-Ray'' was one of the most rewarding professional experiences I've had so far. We had a top-notch cast, a passionate, collaborative director and a story that's going to really provoke some thought when it comes to terrorism and humanity overall. I think it will be well-received.

Camp X-ray A hot ticket, not just because of the film’s lead actress, Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame, but because of the film’s premise: A new guard at Guantanamo Bay (Ms. Stewart) befriends a detainee (Payman Maadi). Ms. Stewart created word clouds and spoken word poetry as a way to develop her character, says the film’s writer-director Peter Sattler. “I think Kristen and I were both aware of her image and upending expectations for that image. This is a side of her that I don’t think anyone else has seen yet,” he said.
